Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a trance state in which a person is extremely relaxed and highly susceptible to suggestions. Hypnotherapy is the process by which hypnosis is used to treat a wide variety of issues such as phobias, addictions, weight loss, behavior modification, and more.

While in a hypnotic trance, the individual is in a deeply relaxed, yet alert state. Contrary to popular belief, the individual is completely awake and can "wake up" out of the hypnotic trance at any time. Each one of us, throughout our day may enter a hypnotic trance. This is especially the case for those watching television, or sometimes while driving.

The state of hypnosis occurs in the alpha brainwave state. While in this state, our subconscious mind is much more susceptible to suggestions as the conscious mind is "bypassed". This simply means that suggestions are heard by our subconscious mind without our conscious mind expressing its opinion about them or us in relation to them. For example, if during a normal alert state you were to hear the suggestion "you are intelligent", despite what the truth might actually be, your conscious mind is going to say to you, "no, I'm not smart...I'm horrible at math, I forget things, etc". And so the suggestion "you are intelligent" is not only not going to help you, but rather your conscious mind is going to sabotage you with its own negative suggestions. On the other hand, if you are given the suggestion while in a hypnotic state, the conscious mind is circumvented (it isn't given a chance to offer its opinion) and the suggestion is given to your subsconscious mind where it is soaked up like a sponge. The subconscious mind takes things literally, so if it hears how intelligent you are, eventually it is going to believe it whole-heartedly and your behavior will change to reflect the attitude and habits of an intelligent person.
